LAKES – Lacus Somniorum

ABOUT

“LAKES” is a cycle of instrumental compositions/sound images whose genesis is based on my fascination with the infinite variety of astronomical phenomena. In this case, it is about the various “lakes” of our Solar system (in the broadest sense of the word) and their fascinating Otherness. These geological structures have various sizes and compositions: some are dark, basaltic plains, others are vast deserts (for example, Lake Eridania on Mars), and others are composed of liquid ethane and methane (such as the lakes of Saturn’s moon Titan).

The title “Lacus Somniorum (Lake of dreams)” refers to a solidified lava lake on the Moon. This formation with irregular contours is connected to Mare Serenitatis in the southwestern part of the Moon and to Lacus Mortis in the North. I was trying to imagine a Journey to this breathtaking world; to visualize and sonorize the feelings and thoughts I would experience on such a “shore”, as a human being, who links all of his experiential values and knowledge to a world that appears to be meaningless in the endlessness of the Unknown. I intended to let emerge an orchestral organism that breathes, almost like a sentient creature; to conceive a formal sound structure that insinuates a continuous flow of an almost nihilistic, motionless state of staticity and to let emerge sound worlds that could potentially manipulate the very perception of temporality. The sonic tapestry of this composition represents also a latent ” crowd” that is never at rest in its movement, as it undulates.
